Fort Buchanan fire inspectors expand child passenger safety services
Rivera and Vega completed the four-day course Sept. 15-18, including required classroom instruction, practical evaluations, tests and hands-on examinations.
The certification expands the preventive services Fort Buchanan Fire & Emergency Services provides to the installation community. Rivera and Vega can now assist parents and caregivers with child passenger safety education, car seat inspections and proper installation techniques.
The service also provides an important resource for new parents who need to ensure a child safety seat is installed correctly before transporting a newborn home from the hospital.
“Inspectors Rivera and Vega volunteered for this training because they recognized a need in our community and wanted to provide families with another level of safety and support,” said Fernando J. Vélez, assistant fire chief of prevention for Fort Buchanan Fire & Emergency Services. “This capability allows our team to help parents make sure their children are transported as safely as possible.”
Child passenger safety technicians receive specialized training on selecting, installing and properly using child restraint systems based on factors such as a child’s age, size and developmental needs. The course also prepares technicians to identify common installation problems and teach parents and caregivers how to use child safety seats correctly.
For Fort Buchanan Fire & Emergency Services, the certification strengthens a prevention-focused approach that seeks to reduce risks before emergencies occur.
“Prevention is at the center of what we do,” Vélez said. “If we can identify a problem before a family gets on the road and give parents the knowledge to protect their children, we are accomplishing our mission before an emergency ever happens.”
Their certification strengthens Fort Buchanan’s community risk reduction efforts while providing families with a practical service designed to protect some of the installation’s youngest community members.
